Annual Report 2008-2009 vii) In-house Training Programme 8.11 A one-day in-house training programme was organized for newly recruited officers and staff of the Commission on 18 July 2008. In all 26 officials/staff were trained in this programme. viii) Interaction with Visiting Students/Trainees from Various Colleges/ Universities of India 8.13 During 2008-2009, the Commission interacted with 776 students/trainees who visited the Commission from 18 different colleges/universities across the country. These students were found to be pursuing different disciplines like law, sociology, social work, human rights, political science, etc. ix) Interaction with Foreign Diplomats 8.14 A group of 23 foreign diplomats from various countries along with two officials of the Foreign Service Institute visited the Commission on 18 March 2009. The Chairperson, Secretary General, Director General (Investigation), Registrar (Law) and Joint Secretary (Trg.) interacted with them. x) Hindi Fortnight at the NHRC 8.15 The NHRC’s Annual Hindi Fortnight, to promote the use of official language in its dayto-day working, was held from 15 to 29 September 2008. The employees of the Commission actively participated in the debate, quiz programme and creative writing competition as well as other programmes organized for the promotion of Hindi language. xi) Foundation Day Function 8.16 The NHRC marked the completion of its 15th year on 12 October 2008 with a Foundation Day function organized at the FICCI Golden Jubilee Auditorium in New Delhi. Justice Shri S. Rajendra Babu, Chairperson, NHRC presided over the function in which the staff and officers of the Commission, children from SOS Children’s Village in Faridabad and other artistes performed. xii) Human Rights Day 8.17 The NHRC celebrated the Human Rights Day on 10 December 2008 at a function organized in the FICCI Golden Jubilee Auditorium in New Delhi. Shri Somnath Chatterjee, Speaker of the Lok Sabha was the Chief Guest and Thiru. A. Raja, Union Minister for Communications and Information Technology was the Guest of Honour. On this occasion, a postage stamp was released signifying the importance of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). A booklet of UDHR in different languages was also released along with NHRC Journal (English), Vol. No. 7, 2008; NHRC Journal (Hindi) Nai Dishayein, Vol. No. 5; Proceedings of NHRC’s Workshop on Detention; and NHRC Wall Calendar for the year 2009. The Chief Guest also inaugurated the on-line registration system of complaints with NHRC. 111
