Chapter 1 - Report of the Education and Public Relations Group (f) Tertiary Institutions A series of lectures and workshops on human rights, focusing on IPT students, were held to enhance the students’ knowledge and awareness of human rights issues and of their relevance to students, and to provide a platform to discuss human rights issues. The students were not only exposed to issues pertaining to human rights but were also encouraged give their opinions on how matters could be improved or problems rectified. Among the programmes that were held in 2014 were: i. A lecture entitled ’Rights of Employees’, in conjunction with the Pro-Citra Group 2 Programme, held for final year students of Pusat Bahasa dan Linguistik, Fakulti Sains Sosial dan Kemasyarakatan on 15 March. This programme was organised by Pusat Bahasa dan Linguistik, Fakulti Sains Sosial dan Kemasyarakatan, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). ii. A lecture on human rights for the Law Faculty students of UKM, specifically for the first year and third year students, on 25 March. This lecture was organised with the collaboration of the United Nations Club of the Law Faculty of UKM. iii. A lecture entitled ’Human Rights for IPT Students’ at the Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Dungun Campus, Terengganu on 29 April. iv. A visit to an OA settlement by lecturers and students of Taylor’s University organised by the Commission and OA NGOs to enable students to see and experience for themselves issues affecting the OA. v. Exhibitions, held by the Commission upon the invitation of several private institutions of higher learning such as Taylor’s University and Kolej Damansara Utama (KDU), with the aim of promoting the Commission’s programmes as well as disseminating information on human rights. vi. A workshop on human rights for the Degree in Moral Education students of Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) on 18 May. This workshop was conducted in collaboration with the Faculty of Social Science (FSK) of UPSI. To strengthen the relationship with UPSI, the Commission and UPSI through the FSK of UPSI are preparing to formalise this cooperation through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to recognise the existing ties between the two parties while enhancing cooperation in the fields of education and human rights. 24
