We see ourselves as so integrated with our territory that our protection is tied to our use and our use is tied to our protection. We use the resources on our territory to live. Rebecca Adamson Activist, Founder of First Nations Development Institute & First Peoples Worldwide The Division was set up in 2012 and entrusted primarily with the follow up to the National Inquiry into the Land Rights of the Indigenous Peoples. The mandate of the Division also includes inquiring into and reporting on matters alleged to be infringements of human rights by the Commission. 1. NATIONAL INQUIRY INTO THE LAND RIGHTS OF THE INDIGENOUS PEOPLES (NI) In the Commission’s 2013 Annual Report, it was reported that in response to the public release of the NI Report, the Government had set up a National Task Force to assess the findings and recommendations of the NI Report vis-à-vis implementation; to develop and incorporate recommendations for short-term and long-term measures to address any existing legal, policy and administrative constraints; as well as to gather additional information on issues. In the year under review, the Commission followed up closely with the relevant authorities on the progress of the Task Force, set up in August 2013, and deferred its follow up activities to enable the Task Force to deliberate and strategise on an effective and successful implementation plan of the NI proposals and recommendations in the overall interest of the indigenous peoples. The Commission was informed that the Task Force’s Report had been submitted to the Minister on 10 September 2014 but as at the end of 2014, the Commission had yet to obtain any information regarding the report. 55
