current illnesses that may impact one’s mental health, and any current intake
of medication, or substance use (cigarettes, alcohol, or illicit drugs).
Psychological Dimension
This dimension focuses on one’s personality and concept of self. It also includes
ones coping mechanisms, thought patterns, and resilience to life experiences.
Also includes past experiences, stressful events, and history of trauma that
could have impacted an individual’s development. One’s current quality of
relationships with parents, caregivers, family, friends, teachers, and peers,
recent life experiences, recent stressors, presence or absence of unhelpful
thoughts, and current demands or obligations are also checked. The stressful
life events you’ve experienced may contribute to the development of mental
illness. For example, enduring traumatic events might cause a condition like
PTSD, while repeated changes in primary caregivers in childhood may influence
the development of an attachment disorder.
Social Dimension
Mental health is a product of social, environmental, and cultural influences.
The social dimension includes an individual’s social relationships, support
system, and present status of relationships with significant others and
important life figures. Takes into consideration a person’s cultural influences
that might impact the individual, which extends to occupational and financial
status, housing arrangements, and legal problems. Social determinants of
mental health are conditions in the environments where a person is born,
live, learn, work, play and age which affects health, functioning, and quality of
life. Examples of which include early childhood development, socio-economic
status, education, employment, discrimination, housing and transportation,
physical environment, and access to quality health care.
