Understanding Mental Health Training Module on the Right to Mental Health for Local Health Leaders Mental health is defined as a state of well-being in which the individual realizes one’s abilities and potentials, copes adequately with the normal stresses of life, displays resilience in the face of extreme life events, works productively and fruitfully, and can make a positive contribution to the community (Mental Health Act, 2018). Under the same law, a mental health provider or mental health professional can provide mental health services such as psychosocial, psychiatric, or neurologic activities and programs. Mental health professionals include medical doctors, psychologists, nurses, social workers, or any appropriatelytrained and qualified person, including but not limited to counselors, peer counselors, informal community caregivers, mental health advocates, and their organizations. What is Mental Health? • A state of mind in which an individual is able to realize their abilities, cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to contribute to their community (WHO) What is Mental Illness? • Health conditions involving changes in emotion, thinking, or behavior (or a combination of these) • Associated with distress and/or problems functioning in social, work, or family activities (APA) Mental Health Continuum 5
