The deaths of children aged 14 or below due to safety accidents decreased from 15.3 per 100,000 population in 1999 to 6.0 in 2008, but the rate is still higher than the OECD average (in 2005) and places Korea in the 3rd standing among the OECD member nations (based on the 2009 data published by the Statistics Korea). When compared to some EU member states, Korea was 3.2 times higher with 8.7 deaths than Sweden with 2.7. Meanwhile, as the statistical data on children's safety accidents are only concerned with the children aged 14 or below, it is difficult to measure the status of the children aged 15 or older.
