HUMAN RIGHTS MODULE FOR PRIMARY SCHOOL Implementation steps 1. The students spread the full-sized newspaper on the floor to cover half of the floor space. 2. The students are told that the spread-out newspaper represents a lotus leaf and the rest of the space, a lake. 3. The students play the role of the frog while the teacher plays the role of the crocodile. 4. The game begins with free movement in the area not covered by the newspaper. The students are free to perform swim strokes or act like frogs. 5. When the teacher yells ‘crocodile’, all the students are required to seek shelter on the lotus leaf. 6. The students who are not on the lotus leaf will be eliminated from the activity. 7. The sheets of newspaper will be decreased after each round is completed to reduce the size of the lotus leaf. 8. The activity continues until only one frog remains on the lotus leaf. He/She is then declared the winner. Discussion/Presentation 9. At the end of the activity, the students are given the time and opportunity to provide their self-reflection on the activity they carried out. 10. The teacher may use the questions below as a guide: i. Describe your feelings when you were performing the activity. ii. Explain your reaction when the space to stand on on the lotus leaf was reduced. What were your feelings? iii. Were you pushed off the lotus leaf? What were your feelings when you were pushed off? iv. How did you help your friends during the activity? Did you choose any specific friends to save? v. If the lotus leaf is likened to some of the rights of the child, in your opinion, should anyone be exempted from enjoying them? 85
