HUMAN RIGHTS MODULE FOR PRIMARY SCHOOL Implementation steps 1. The students are divided into 4 groups and instructed to stand in line in their respective groups. 2. The teacher prepares 4 pieces of paper on which he/she writes 4 different rights stated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). Examples of such sentences: i. Everyone has the right to life and liberty. ii. No one can be turned into a slave. iii. No one can be tortured and treated inhumanely. iv. Everyone must be treated equally. 3. Each group is asked to send a representative to see the teacher who is standing at the back. 4. The teacher gives a piece of paper containing a sentence to each representative and asks him/her to memorise the entire sentence. 5. When this has been done, the teacher instructs the representative to deliver the information, beginning with the student at the back. Each student is then required to deliver the message to the student in front until it reaches the student at the very front. 6. The student at the very front of the group is then given a piece of paper and a pen or pencil. 7. He/She is asked to write the sentence he/she had been told on the piece of paper. Discussion/Presentation 8. At the end of the activity, the teacher provides the rationale for the activity. The rationale could be that each activity carried out represents one of the rights that belongs to human beings. This right cannot be removed or stripped away by any party. All human beings must know the rights that belong to them. Other values learned are cooperation, and that focus and sensitivity in accepting the tasks also determine the success of each group. 9. The teacher is also encouraged to explain to the students the meaning of the sentences that were provided at the beginning of the activity. 71
