HUMAN RIGHTS MODULE FOR PRIMARY SCHOOL HUMAN RIGHTS MODULES FOR SECONDARY AND PRIMARY SCHOOL The Human Rights Modules for Secondary and Primary School were developed by SUHAKAM with the support of the MOE as well as input from the Curriculum Development Division, School Management Division and Education Policy Planning and Research Division of the MOE. The modules aim to introduce the principles and terms of human rights and child rights such as ‘equality’ and ‘non-discrimination’ to the students. At the same time, they stress on the universality and the interdependence of the rights. The modules contain practical activities that aim to teach students on the application of human rights by taking into consideration the Malaysian socio-cultural context. The implementation of the activities in the modules encourages higher order thinking skills (HOTS) and active participation of the students. The teachers only need to guide the students by providing the objectives and strategies for each activity, as well as the relevant general principles, while the students are tasked with doing research, expressing their views, making presentations, etc. Thus, active student participation and empowerment in identifying issues and solutions that take into account human rights principles can take place. It is hoped that the teaching and learning of the modules will not only enhance students’ knowledge but also mould their personality and behaviour so as to preserve their right to personal freedom as well as to respect, protect and promote the rights of others, including family, teachers, other students and the society in general. In order to realise the continued right to participation of teachers and students in improving the implementation of the modules, SUHAKAM has attached evaluation form for teachers and students to provide their opinions and comments on the modules. ACKNOWLEDGEMENT The activities contained in the modules are a combination of the original ideas of SUHAKAM and the MOE as well as the inspiration from various local and foreign training modules that served as references for the development of the modules. SUHAKAM expresses its highest appreciation to all the parties involved, directly or indirectly, in providing support, cooperation, advice and contributions to the activities in the Human Rights Modules for Secondary and Primary School. Our immeasurable gratitude to the MOE, especially the Director-General of Education, Datuk Dr Amin Bin Senin, as well as the schools and teachers involved in the pilot project for the introduction and implementation of the activities in the modules that was conducted on 2829 September and 23-24 October 2017 in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan as well as the two workshops for harmonisation of the modules, held on 3 May and 28 June 2018 at the SUHAKAM office.
