HUMAN RIGHTS MODULE FOR PRIMARY SCHOOL ii. Additional information:  Human rights emphasise the fact that every human being is born equal in dignity and rights, regardless of race, religion, colour, gender and status. These rights have been documented in the 30 articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) adopted by the United Nations (UN) on 10 December 1948. Malaysia is a member state of the UN.  The rights of the child are a part of human rights. The list of the rights of the child is stated in the CRC.  Malaysia has been a signatory to the CRC since 1995. This means that the Malaysian Government has agreed to ensure that the rights of the child are promoted and protected in Malaysia.  There are 54 articles in the CRC listing the rights of the child as well as the responsibility of the government to protect those rights.  A child is a person who is 18 years of age and below. iii. Among the articles of the CRC that are relevant to the activity:  Non-discrimination (Article 2, CRC)  Protection against interference with privacy (Article 16, CRC)  Protection from all forms of abuse by parents or guardians (Article 19, CRC)  Standards for healthcare and health services (Article 24, CRC)  Right to education (Article 28, CRC) Appendix for choice of theme 1. The right of the child to education  Every child must have access to adequate education.  Children must be given the opportunity to develop their personality, talents and mental and physical capabilities to the fullest extent.  The drop-out rate must be reduced, and children must be encouraged to attend school. 2. The right of the child to health  Children must be given adequate access to health services.  Children must be given a balanced diet for healthy growth. 11
