Preliminary Part 1 Section 1 An Act relating to discrimination on the ground of disability Part 1—Preliminary 1 Short title This Act may be cited as the Disability Discrimination Act 1992. 2 Commencement (1) Sections 1 and 2 commence on the day on which this Act receives the Royal Assent. (2) Subject to subsection (3), the remaining provisions of this Act commence on a day or days to be fixed by Proclamation. (3) If a provision of this Act does not commence under subsection (2) within the period of 12 months beginning on the day on which this Act receives the Royal Assent, it commences on the first day after the end of that period. 3 Objects The objects of this Act are: (a) to eliminate, as far as possible, discrimination against persons on the ground of disability in the areas of: (i) work, accommodation, education, access to premises, clubs and sport; and (ii) the provision of goods, facilities, services and land; and (iii) existing laws; and (iv) the administration of Commonwealth laws and programs; and (b) to ensure, as far as practicable, that persons with disabilities have the same rights to equality before the law as the rest of the community; and Disability Discrimination Act 1992 Compilation No. 33 Compilation date: 12/4/18 Authorised Version C2018C00125 registered 19/04/2018 1 Registered: 19/4/18
