Annual Report 2016 Chapter 3: Highlights of Activities of NHRC in 2016 NHRC new commission pays homage to Bangabandhu at Tungipara, Gopalgonj On 05 August, 2016 NHRC’s new Chairman Kazi Reazul Hoque, Full-Time Member Md. Nazrul Islam, Honorary members Begum Nurun Naher Osmani, Meghna Guhathakurta, Banchita Chakma, Enamul Hoque Chowdhury, Akhter Hussain paid homage to the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman by placing wreaths of flowers at his Mazar at Tungipara, Gopalgonj. After placing the wreaths, they stood in solemn silence for some time as a mark of profound respect to the Father of the Nation. In the Munajat, prayers were offered seeking eternal peace of the departed soul of Bangabandhu. Earlier, in the morning of the day, they also paid tribute to the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman by placing wreaths of flowers in front of Bangabandhu Memorial Museum, Road No 32, Dhanmondi, Dhaka. 3.1 Advocacy Effort of NHRC 3.1.1 Inspection Inspection at Dhaka Central Jail On 23 August 2016, Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj was inspected by the Chairman of NHRC, members and officers. During the inspection, Kazi Reazul Hoque, Chairman, NHRC talked with some prisoners and the prison officials. After the visit, the Chairman talked to the media. He said, “The inmates inside newly built Dhaka Central Jail are deprived of their human rights as far as the following points are concerned. They are not served quality foods and there is habitual delay in the serving of foods. There is no corner for prayer at the central jail at present and there is also water crisis. The jail lacks gas connection and faces deficit of electricity supply.” He also said, “We will write to the government to resolve the problems in order to ensure the human rights of the inmates. Inmates are to be considered innocent until they are proven guilty by the competent court”. 13
