and suicidal behaviour to effectively target and support children and
young people
o understanding the impact and interrelated nature of protective factors
o direct participation of children and young people in research
o understanding the incidence of and mechanisms leading to intentional
self-harm without suicidal intent
o evaluating effectiveness of services after a suicide death
o investigating ways to restrict access to the means used for intentional
self-poisoning
o finding effective ways to encourage children and young people to
access appropriate help or support for early signs and symptoms of
difficulties.

The Australian Government should support implementation of the National
Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Strategic Action Plan 2018–2028 and
address the recommendations made by the Senate Inquiry into Effective
Approaches to Prevention, Diagnosis and Support for Fetal Alcohol Spectrum
Disorder.

The Australian and New Zealand Child Death Review and Prevention Group
should be supported to continue its work in relation to the development of a
national child death database, in conjunction with the Australian Institute of
Health and Welfare.

Australian Governments should ensure health systems and services meet the
specific sexual and reproductive health needs of adolescents, including
access to prescribed medical forms of contraception, safe abortion services
and sexual health information.
Living standards
•
The Australian Government should develop a national poverty reduction plan
that explicitly focuses on children.
•
Australian Governments should work to increase social housing stock and
affordable housing with a specific focus on the needs of homeless children
and young people. This should form part of the overall strategy for advancing
children’s rights.
