On 19 December 2011, the General Assembly adopted a new Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child to
give this Committee a complaint function similar to that of other treaty bodies. The Optional Protocol can be expected to come
into effect within two or three years.

The individual complaints procedure has not yet been accepted by a sufficient number of States parties to make it operational
(May 2012).
