Part III Human rights education in practice Chapter 8: Evaluating human rights education132 133 KEY QUESTIONS • What is evaluation and why is it important for human rights education? • What are evaluation criteria? • How can evaluation be carried out? • How can evaluation results be reported and to whom? As practitioners of human rights education, it is imperative that we take a fresh look at the role of educational evaluation. How can educational evaluation benefit our work? Is it enough to distribute questionnaires at the end of a human rights training session to see if participants learned something or can evaluation play a greater role than this? Exploring the concept of educational evaluation can expand our idea of what evaluation is and how it can enhance our human rights education work.133 The third process in the practice of human rights education is evaluation. Evaluation involves gathering information, usually following an activity or programme, that explains how well the outcomes have been met. This chapter describes the purpose and types of evaluation and offers a range of methods and techniques for different human rights education activities.
