Collaboration and engagement with local and international counterparts in the areas of staffs’ training such as the internship at Her Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service to acquire knowledge and to share best practices through various platforms such as the Asian and Pacific Conference on Correctional Administrators (APCCA), International Corrections and Prisons Association (ICCPA), Asian Conference of Correctional Facilities Architects and Planner (ACCFA) and the World Congress on Probation and Parole. 2.2. Attorney Julie May C. Taguiam, Chief Superintendent, Bureau of Corrections, Philippines on behalf of Undersecretary Gerald Q. Bantaq, the Director General of the Bureau of Corrections, Philippines delivered a briefing to the audience about the corrections system in the Philippines and its progress. The prison system of the Philippines is generally composed of two agencies namely the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) and the Bureau of Corrections (BUCOR). I. The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) BJMP was created by the Republic Act No. 6975.26 BJMP incarcerates those who are under trials and hosts convicts of crime who undergo prison sentence below and not higher than three years. BJMP together with the Provincial Government manage and supervise provincial, district, city, and municipal jails under the Department of the Interior and Local Government. BJMP conducted different programmes for Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDL) under its mandate such as custody, security, and control programme, welfare and development programme, decongestion programme and good governance. II. The Bureau of Corrections (BUCOR) BUCOR is an agency categorised under the prison in the Philippines. The agency caters to those who are already convicted by a competent part of jurisdiction with a prison sentence of three years and one day or above. Compared to BJMP which has a hundred of operating units, BUCOR only has seven prisons and penal farms nationwide.27 25 Currently there are 18 prison facilities are equipped with the electronic security system.
