Mental Health Action Plan
Mental Health is a critical component of an individual’s overall health and widely
considered as the foundation for well-being. According to the World Health
Organization, a person’s mental health and well-being helps an individual to
realize his or her own potentials, cope with normal stresses of life, display
resilience in the face of extreme life events, work productively, and make a
positive contribution to the community.
Dealing with mental health concerns involve a multi-sectoral and multidisciplinary approach. In doing so, institute community-based intervention to
affect a wider audience. The mental health action plan points to suggested
activities that focus on three key areas namely: Education and Capacity
Building, Provision of Mental Health Services, and the Promotion of a Healthy
Environment with the aim of providing a holistic approach towards promoting
a mental health and well-being within the faith communities.

Education plays a key role in introducing the concept of mental health in
the community. Literacy and awareness campaigns help in introducing the
importance of mental health in the overall well-being of an individual, help
in debunking common misconceptions about mental health, and reduces the
overall stigma surrounding the topic. Moreover, discussions should not be
limited to mental health alone, but should cover topics that promote healthy
living such as the importance of nutrition, physical activity, work-life balance,
regular sleep-habit, positive routines and practices, which can positively
impact the mental health and well-being of an individual. Since the action
plan is designed for faith communities, it is important to incorporate the
biopsychosocial-spiritual model in the discussion. To bridge the importance
of spirituality in mental health as it often influences the belief and attitude
towards the topic.
Capacity building activities such as improving the social and communications
skills and coping strategies of an individual, would help in promoting selfefficacy, making the person more resilient and capable of handling stressful
situations.
