addition, nearly half of all the foreign fishermen had not been enrolled in mandatory labor insurance. All of these were issues that had already been addressed before I joined the NHRC. I felt that something had to be done by our country. I was fortunate to join the NHRC’s “Task Force on the Human Rights of Foreign Fishermen,” which launched a series of inspections, conversations, and collaborations. I believe that Taiwan can change. Human trafficking turns human beings into “merchandise and slaves.” It is a serious crime against humanity as it violates the freedom and dignity of its victims, and inflicts immense harm to individual families as well as the entire human race. We must not turn a blind eye to the pain and suffering of victimized fishermen and their families; let’s gather our strength to eliminate human trafficking. Road to Migrant Fishers’ Rights 009
