In January 2022, an
investigation by U.S.
Customs and Border
Protection (CBP) found
evidence of forced labor
aboard the Taiwaneseowned and operated
fishing vessel “DA WANG”
registered in Vanuatu.
The AP reports led to the Obama government passing the Trade
Facilitation and Trade Enforcement Act of 2015, which essentially removes
the “consumptive demand clause” from the Tariff Act of 1930 (a loophole
in the prohibition against goods produced by forced labor to be imported
into the United States), opening the way for more rigorous enforcement by
Customs. The United States has enforced a strict ban on the import of goods
produced by forced labor since.
