We supported Samoa’s NHRI to undertake a gender audit At the request of the Office of the Ombudsman of Samoa, we facilitated a gender audit for the Office, based on the APF resource Facilitating a NHRI Gender Audit: Toolkit for National Human Rights Institutions, which supports NHRIs to assess, identify and mainstream gender considerations and the human rights of women and girls in all their operations. APF facilitators worked with a small core team from the Office, all of which had completed the APF foundational online course on gender equality as well as the APF Level 2 course on facilitating a gender audit. Due to COVID pandemic and travel restrictions, the gender audit was facilitated remotely through online sessions and interviews. We received very positive feedback from the Office in relation to the quality, usefulness and relevance of the process. The APF will continue to liaise with the Office to provide support where necessary to implement recommendations from the gender audit report. We continued to promote equality in gender representation The APF encourages NHRIs to advocate for equitable representation of women at leadership levels, especially where they have control over the staff recruitment process. move towards more member institutions within the gender equitable range and an increase in the representation of women at leadership levels. In 2021-22, 32 percent of APF members reported being within the ‘gender equitable’ range at the Commissioner level, down from 40 percent during last reporting period. The APF is committed to working to reverse this trend and Staffing within the APF secretariat sits within the ‘gender equitable’ range, with women comprising 72.7% of staff during 2021-22.
