We helped to build momentum for NHRIs in the Pacific In 2020-21 we remained engaged with the government of the Cook Islands on its proposal to establish a NHRI. We also received a new request to support the Government of Papua New Guinea, which has renewed its commitment to establish an independent NHRI. APF staff travelled to Port Moresby in April 2022 for a technical workshop to discuss the proposal with government counterparts, alongside representatives from the Pacific Community (SPC) and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). We also worked with the Ombudsman of Samoa which is considering advocacy for changes to its enabling legislation in line with SCA recommendations. We supported APF members on accreditation APF member institutions, along with NHRIs from around the world, take part in a regular accreditation process by GANHRI to assess their compliance with the Paris Principles. We support members and new institutions to undertake the accreditation process, by providing advice on preparing the written application, preparing for the interview with GANHRI’s SCA, and responding to the SCA’s postsession report.
