Unlawful discrimination enquiries and
complaints by ground
The Human Rights Act makes it unlawful to discriminate on a wide range
of grounds and specific personal characteristics. In addition, there are
other types of unlawful discrimination such as sexual harassment, racial
harassment, victimisation, and if an employer treats an employee adversely
because they are affected by family violence or because their employer
thinks they might be.24
Chart 3 compares the grounds of unlawful discrimination (including the
specific types) in enquiries and complaints raised with the Commission in
2018/19. Race-related consolidated includes race, colour, national and
ethnic origin.
