Harassment of a Female News Presenter (Suo Moto-18/18)
Media reported that a female news presenter was threatened and offered illegal proposal from
suspended DIG Mijanur Rahman (suspended due to abuse of power and violence against women) to
withdraw allegation against him. Otherwise he threatened to kill her whole family. She went to
nearby police station to lodge complaint but police did not took the complaint. The suspended DIG
also threatened to harass the news presenter spreading distorted photos on internet. This news report
drew attention of NHRC.
NHRC took the complaint with strong conviction and asked for report from the Secretary, Public
Security Division, Ministry of Home Affairs. The Ministry sent report that the news presenter
lodged FIR in Ramna Thana. The allegation of illegally publishing her photo in Facebook is under
investigation of Cyber Crime Unit of Police. Commission wrote to the Cyber Crime Unit to report
Commission about their actions taken.
Monica Barua Missing (Suo Moto 26/18)
Prothom Alo published a report on 04 May 2018 that Monica Barua, a teacher of Little Jwels School
in Chittagong was missing since 12 April 2018. Her husband lodged FIR in Khulshi Thana next day.
Still Ms. Monica is missing.
NHRC took the case Suo Moto and asked the Deputy Commissioner of Chittagong to take strong
action in finding Ms. Monica and inform the Commission about the steps taken. DC sent report
mentioning that the investigation is undergoing.
Eve Teasing by a Police (Suo Moto 17/18)
The media reported that a traffic police, Saiful, teased a woman named Tania Alam, a software
engineer while she was going to drop her children her children to Sunnydale School by her Scutter
bike at Dhanmondi 11 on 26 March 2018. Suddenly the traffic police made offensive and aggressive
remarks about her in front of her children. He also provoked other car-drivers there to hit her
Scutter. When Tania Alam went to police station to lodge a complaint against Saiful, ASI Akram
Hasan, advised her not to lodge complaint. NHRC took the complaint with strong conviction and
asked report from the Secretary, Public Security Division, Ministry of Home Affairs. NHRC
received report from the Ministry and reviewing it.
