It disposed off 175 cases alleging harassment of prisoners, 56 cases alleging lack of medical facilities in jails and 270 cases relating to other aspects of conditions in jails with appropriate recommendations. For details see Annexure 5. 4.10 In addition to the above, 455 cases alleging atrocities against members of the Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes were disposed off by the Commission, as also 7 cases of communal violence and 3,124 cases relating to ‘other’ incidents. For details see Annexure 5. 4.11 The Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993 (PHRA) is based on the premise that full cooperation will be extended to the NHRC by both the Central and State Governments. It is therefore incumbent on the part of the Centre and States to support the Commission in its efforts to dispose off cases relating to human rights violation promptly and efficiently, in order to ensure better protection of human rights, as envisaged under the Act.
