Annual Report 2008-2009 13. iii) It was recommended that for implementation of human rights education at different levels of the school system, there is a need to constitute a Monitoring Committee both at the national and state levels as well as building-up of supportive networks and partnerships with parents, civil society organizations and the community at large. Summer and Winter Internship Programmes 8.7 In order to sensitize university/college students about various human rights concerns, the Commission since 2000 has been regularly conducting two internship programmes of one month duration each every year. During 2008-2009, the summer internship programme was organized by it from 19 May to 18 June 2008 in which 53 students from 35 universities/colleges of 17 States of India participated. The winter internship programme was organized from 17 December 2008 to 15 January 2009 by the Commission. 53 students from 20 universities/colleges of 14 States attended this programme. Both these programmes covered various human rights issues being dealt by the Commission. In order to give first hand information, the students of both the internship programmes were taken for field visits to SOS Children’s Village and other organizations. As part of the internship programme, the students were also given project assignments and were required to make presentations on them as well. iv) Training Programmes Organized by the NHRC 8.8 As part of accomplishing its mandate, the Commission approved 123 training programmes of 65 institutions/universities/NGOs on various aspects of human rights to be organized during the reporting period all over the country with special focus on the NorthEastern States and other backward States/Union Territories. Out of these, 114 training programmes were successfully organized by 58 institutions/universities/NGOs. For details see Annexure-13. v) Summer Training Programme 8.9 In order to sensitize university students about human rights issues, the Commission in collaboration with Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia National Law University, Lucknow organized a summer human rights training programme from 16 June to 15 July 2008. The programme was attended by 62 participants from the State of Uttar Pradesh. The programme was inaugurated by Chairperson, State Law Commission of Uttar Pradesh. The Chairperson, NHRC also addressed the participants. vi) Training Programme for Indian Foreign Service Probationers 8.10 The Commission organized a two-day attachment programme for 15 Indian Foreign Service Probationers of the 2007 batch on 5 & 6 June 2008. During this attachment programme, the probationers interacted with the Chairperson, Members, Secretary General and other senior officials of the Commission. 110
