Making Disability Rights Real, the second report of the Independent
Monitoring Mechanism (IMM) of the United Nations Convention of the
Rights of Persons with Disabilities was completed in June 2014. The first
report was released on 3 December 2012.
Working in conjunction with its IMM partners, the Commission prepared
and drafted the second joint report which details experiences of disabled
people in Aotearoa New Zealand and barriers to the full realisation of
their rights. The report, which covers the period July 2012–December
2013, highlights five overarching issues including: data; accessibility;
building a people driven system; violence and abuse; and education.
It also sets out 38 recommended steps to better respect and fulfil
disabled people’s rights.
The Disability Convention Coalition, a group comprised of eight disabled
people’s organisations (DPOs), provided an important voice for disabled
people throughout the process and ensured the views of disabled people
were included in the report.
The report was subject to intensive consultation and it underwent much
iteration as IMM partners and stakeholders provided feedback on content
and wording.
The Commission received confirmation from the IMM partners that
they are very satisfied with the final report, meeting the performance
measure of 100 per cent agreement by the IMM with the report and its
thoroughness and value meeting the standard of the prior year.
