Case Study In Country X, a young man named Alex was detained in a local prison for minor theft. During his detention, he experienced physical abuse from prison guards and fellow inmates. Alex’s health deteriorated significantly, and he was denied access to necessary medical care. During an unannounced visit by the NHRI’s NPM unit, Alex was found in a dire condition. Interviews with Alex and other detainees revealed that such treatment was not an isolated incident. Systematic issues like overcrowding, lack of staff training, and inadequate medical facilities were prevalent. Furthermore, there was an apparent culture of impunity among the prison staff, exacerbating the abuse. In addition, NPM visits also found delays in the judicial process were slow, resulting in prolonged pre-trial detentions. There were also significant delays in legal aid, leaving many detainees without proper legal representation.
