5. Intimation of all deaths occurring from whatever cause in the prison
should be sent to nearest magistrate to hold inquest & SHO of police
station having jurisdiction to make a preliminary investigation.
The Medical Of icer shall record in a register the following
particulars, so far as they can be ascertained, namely:
(1) the day on which the deceased irst complained of illness or
was observed to be ill,
(2) the labour, if any, on which he was engaged on that day,
(3) the scale of his diet on that day,
(4) the day on which he was admitted to hospital,
(5) the day on which the Medical Of icer was irst informed of the
illness,
(6) the nature of the disease,
(7)when the deceased was last seen before his death by the
Medical Of icer or Medical Subordinate,
(8) when the prisoner died, and
(9) In cases where a post-mortem examination is made an account of
the appearances after death.

What are the provisions for disposal of dead body of prisoners?
Only after the post-mortem, body may be handed over to relatives if
available. For this purpose body may be kept for 24 hours in
mortuary, and then if no relative available, body can be disposed. The
body should be handed over to relatives subject to the condition that
there shall be no public demonstration of any nature.

What are the NHRC Guidelines for post-mortem video- ilming
in cases of encounter & custodial deaths?
Aim of video- ilming and photography is to
1. Record the indings of detailed post-mortem examination which
may suggest custodial torture.
2. Supplement the inding of post-mortem examination (recorded in
the post-mortem report) by video graphic evidence.
3. Facilitate an independent review of the examination at a later stage if
required.
