The right to the highest attainable standard of health remains in jeopardy in the country. The
United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child (2009) noted the hidden and increasing
situation of HIV/AIDS and inadequate level of awareness of HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted
infections (ST!s) among Philippine adolescents; the table below indicates an increase in the
number of new HIV cases reported in the country. Meanwhile, tuberculosis remains a leading
cause of morbidity and mofiality in the country (see table).
