HUMAN RIGHTS AND THE ARTS In November, the Commission successfully published its first-ever human rights comic comprising six interesting stories centred on the principles of the CRC. The Commission plans to launch the comic in early 2015 and to distribute it to schoolchildren as an educational tool to promote their understanding of the values enshrined in the CRC. 5. TALKS AND EXHIBITIONS The Commission continued to carry out its outreach programmes, ‘SUHAKAM Bersama Masyarakat‘ (SUHAKAM with the Community), to raise awareness among the grassroots community of the Commission’s work as well as to obtain feedback from the community on issues of human rights concern. These programmes were held in Sabak Bernam, Selangor (5 March), Slim River, Perak (16 June), Sri Aman (19 August) and Lundu (24 September) in Sarawak and Bachok, Kelantan (3 November). The Commission was invited by three higher learning institutions, namely Taylor’s University, KDU University College and Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI), to deliver talks on human rights issues as well as to host exhibition booths on their campuses on 29 May, 2 October, as well as from 3-4 December, respectively. The Commission was also invited by the UM Law Society to host an exhibition booth on 12 December in conjunction with its Human Rights Day celebration. 6. COURTESY CALLS (a) Visits by Local and Foreign Delegations The Commission welcomed 28 local and foreign delegations from NGOs, UN agencies, universities and NHRIs as well as diplomatic corps. The key visits are summarized as follows: Date Details 4 March The Commission was visited by the former Chairperson of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child (CRC Committee) Prof Jaap E. Doek and representatives from UNICEF to discuss issues concerning the Commission’s work in relation to child rights advocacy as well as the Commission’s parallel report to the CRC Committee. 26 March The Commission was visited by Mr Chris Duggan from the Canadian Office of Religious Freedom and representatives from the Canadian High Commission. The main purpose of the visit was to exchange views on issues relating to religious freedom as well as the promotion of pluralism and tolerance in both countries. 32
