ISBN: 978-0-478-35661-8 Te Kāhui Tika Tangata, the New Zealand Human Rights Commission is an independent Crown Entity. One of its primary functions is to promote and protect the human rights of all people in Aotearoa New Zealand. The Commission works towards a free, fair, safe, and just Aotearoa, where diversity is valued, and human dignity and rights are respected. Under the Human Rights Act 1993, the Commission’s primary functions include advocating and promoting respect for, and an understanding and appreciation of, human rights in New Zealand society, and promoting equal employment opportunities (s 5(1)(a) and (d)). In order to carry out its primary functions, the Commission, monitors compliance with the implementation of international human rights treaties ratified by New Zealand (s 5(2)(kc)) and promotes the human rights dimensions of Te Tiriti o Waitangi (s 5(2)(ca)). To that end, the Equal Employment Opportunities Commissioner upholds and protects the human rights of workers, including ensuring that businesses and the government meet their human rights obligations and responsibilities.
