Initial media reports
An article released shortly after the incident of live ammunition fired at protestors, on Sinhala
media reported the following facts:
“One person was killed and 27 others were injured in a scuffle in Rambukkana town
and are being treated at Kegalle and Rambukkana hospitals. Among the injured are
ten policemen including an Assistant Superintendent of Police, who are receiving
treatment at the Kegalle Hospital. It is reported that security forces have been
deployed to ensure security in the area.
The director of the Kegalle hospital confirmed that one person has died. The police
fired tear gas onto the demonstrators to disperse the crowd which had been
protesting for more than fifteen hours. The police were then reportedly pelted with
stones. Hospital sources said that four of the injured were in critical condition.”35
