Lu Hsiu-yi, battered, with his clothes all
torn, refused to back down as he entered the
Legislative Yuan for the third time to give
Liang Su-yung a piece of his mind. The police was ordered to drag him off for a third
time.
Lu, refusing to give up, entered the
chamber for the fourth time. He was again
dragged away and quickly fainted in the
break room. Tai Chen-yao, who as also
beaten and battered, held Lu Hsiu-yi and
cried out for help. Other DPP legislators
struggled to bypass the police and rescue
the two of them. They were rushed to National Taiwan University Hospital, where
they were both hospitalized for serious injuries.
Society was outraged at how elected legislators could be beaten by the police to the
point of hospitalization. The incident fanned
the flames of the already flaring movement
“supporting amendments to depose the old
thieves”. The DPP launched the April 17
March and tens of thousands of people took
to the streets of Taipei.
