Photographer: Huang Yen-wen On the 17th, the Brainstorming Breakfast Assembly and New Kuomintang Alliance, two sub-groups of the KMT’s Executive Yuan, jointly proposed a provisional motion to abolish the Betrayers Punishment Act. The motion was quickly approved on third reading. On the same day, Chen Cheng-jan, Liao Weicheng, Wang Hsiu-hui, and Masao Nikar were immediately released on bail. However, the KMT refused to budge an inch when it came to Article 100 of the Criminal Code, which targeted ideological rebellion. On the 20th, academic and social movement cir- cles launched the March Against the White Terror and Political Persecution. Students camped out in front of the Control Yuan and on the slow lane of Zhongshan South Road, demanding “resignation of the Hau Pei-tsun Cabinet”, “abolition of Article 100 of the Criminal Code”, “withdrawal of intelligence units from schools”, and “acquittal of those involved in the Taiwan Independence Association incident”. However, that wasn’t the end of the Taiwan Independence Association incident. Afterward, prosecutors charged Chen Cheng-jan and others with Article 100 of the Criminal Code instead.
