When setting up focus groups decide:
1. H
ow many groups you need and how many people should be in each group. In a small NHRI,
all staff and Board members may be able to participate. In larger NHRIs, this is unlikely to be
practical. The aim is to involve a representative cross-section of the organisation without making
the process unmanageable. In most cases, groups of 6–10 participants work well.
2. H
ow you will structure the groups. You may choose mixed groups with participants from across the
NHRI, groups based on role or identity, or a combination of both. Try to ensure the groups reflect
the diversity of your NHRI and key stakeholders.
It is also important that participants understand their role from the beginning. Focus groups are
designed to provide ideas, perspectives and feedback to inform the Strategic Framework. They
are not decision-making bodies. Final decisions remain with the Board and Senior Leadership,
coordinated by the GSDT. Be clear about this early so expectations remain realistic and constructive.
