Chapter 1 - Report of the Education and Public Relations Group On 17 December, the US Ambassador to Malaysia, H.E Joseph Y Yun, called on the Commission’s Chairman Tan Sri Hasmy Agam to discuss, among others, issues of human trafficking in Malaysia. Members of the Commission with Mr Olivier De Schutter, UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, with representatives of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (b) Courtesy calls and meetings The Commission paid three courtesy calls to brief senior government officials on the key findings of the NI: • • • Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Sukarti Wakiman, Sabah State Secretary, on 5 March Tan Sri Dr Ali Hamsa, Chief Secretary to the Government, on 4 April; and Tan Sri Datuk Amar Haji Mohamad Morshidi Abdul Ghani, Sarawak State Secretary, on 9 April. On 19 August, the Commission met the Chief Secretary to the Government and Dato’ Haji Ismail Ibrahim, the Director-General of the Legal Affairs Division of the Prime Minister’s Department. The discussion covered the absence of parliamentary debate of the Commission’s Annual Reports; proposed amendments to the Commission’s founding Act; the need for Malaysia to accede to core human rights instruments; issues involving the NI and NHRAP; and government funding and resources for the Commission’s operations. On 10 October, the Commission paid a courtesy call on YB Datuk Hajah Rohani Abdul Karim, the Minister of Women, Family and Community Development. The rights of women, children and persons with disabilities were discussed, alongside international human rights instruments pertaining to these vulnerable groups. On 2 December, the Commission called on YB Puan Hajah Nancy Shukri, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, to discuss pertinent human rights issues. These included the proposed 37
