Right to Sexual and Reproductive Health Education 2016 In Grade Two the topic on ‘Changing with Years’ further explains the process of growth and growing up, illustrating the stages of life from a baby to adulthood. Grade 2 The topic ‘Keeping Safe’ is further explained, where students are given examples and explanations on good and bad touch in more detail and they are also taught to respect their bodies. The chapter on ‘Health and Body Awareness’ continues with the topic on growth and growing up and introduces students to the physical changes that take place in their body with age. Grade 3 In this grade a new topic on ‘Body Safety Rules’ is introduced to the students. Even though the information on what are the private parts is subtle, the introduction to the safety rules is a very positive change. Key Stage 2 The Unit ‘Growing Up’ introduces students to the topic Puberty. It is defined as “a stage in a person’s life during which he/she develops from a child into an adult and becomes capable of reproduction.” Students are also taught the average age at which puberty usually starts, (10 for girls and 11 for boys). Grade 4 Even though the information is minimal, sexual abuse is mentioned and students are taught how to identify the signs of a victim of abuse. They are also given instructions on the actions they can take in such a situation to help and to get help. The topic ‘Growing Up’ further highlights the changes that occur in boys and girls in their pre‐teens. Grade 5 Grade 6 To build on the previous information on safety rules, students are taught about ‘Saying NO’ in dangerous or abusive situations. Students are taught how to differentiate between good and bad touches, and how to deal with risky situations effectively.
