for more on the role of the UN in preventing reprisals, see the video ‘ISHR’s analysis about the UN
actions on reprisals’.
The UN Human Rights system also has two Asian country-based Special Procedures, i.e. the Special
Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Cambodia and Myanmar. Although not based in the
region, these engage with actors and make recommendations, including on HRDs in their respective
countries.

Example: NHRI and UN collaborating for HRDs in Afghanistan
The Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) has worked with OHCHR, the UN
Mission in the country (UNAMA) and other UN mechanisms to promote and protect the rights of human
rights defenders (HRDs).
“Following the publication of a special report, in February [2021], on the killing of HRDs, journalists and
media workers, UNAMA and OHCHR initiated discussions with several embassies and international
partners on a support and resettlement programme for at-risk HRDs and media workers seeking to
leave the country”.
