Income for males in the community is generally at Divisoria, in the nearby port area or in construction work, all of which are typically seasonal and irregular, resulting in periods of unemployment and fluctuations in household income. Generally, families are capable of purchasing enough rice and viand to sustain themselves. However, during periods of unemployment families often can only afford to eat one meal per day, known as ‘al-tang-hap’, an abbreviation for almusal (breakfast), tanghalian (lunch) and hapunan (dinner). Water and electricity connection in the community is confined to only a few households, with most families purchasing electricity from those with a meter. Some households have running water connection, either directly through a meter or purchased of those with a direct connection. Most households have to purchase containers of water from vendors within the community as they have no running water connection. Schools and medical facilities are located just outside the Compound and are easily accessible within minutes. There is also a municipal health centre within Parola, but it is not stocked with medicines, which must be purchased outside.
