Meeting of the Thematic Committee on Providing recommendations on human rights protection related laws, treaties and other international instruments Meeting of this committee was held on 29 April 2021. NHRCB Chairman and Chair of this Committee Nasima Begum, ndc presided over the meeting. She said that we all noticed that violence against women increased during covid situation. NHRCB had started National Inquiry on this issue. It has been noticed that Bangladesh has made significant achievements in terms of women empowerment. But the violence against women had blurred these achievements. “However, it is a matter of hope that, at present if a woman or girl becomes rape victim, she or her family members lodges case. Media played very crucial role in this regard” she mentioned. The members of the committee discussed, “Government is committed to end VAW. Article 28(4) stipulates those special measures should be taken in this regard. Right to property is settled as per family Law/Shariah Law in Bangladesh. But women do not get exact portion of their property. We all need to ensure women’s right to property. Now a days, if there is no son in a family, property goes out of that family. Women cannot be dependent on others in present situation. Thus, we need to rethink about the issue and take initiative so that people can give property to their daughters.
