Other International Mechanism a) United Nations 48 The United Nations (UN) makes comprehensive recommendations for Governments, regional and international organizations, with regard to law reform and law enforcement; measures to address the root factors that encourage trafficking in women and girls for prostitution and other forms of commercialized sex. It further provides resource allocation for programmes to heal and rehabilitate into society victims of trafficking. The UN through its agencies like UNIFEM, UNICEF, UNDP and UNESCO encourage governments to develop systematic data-collection methods and continuously update information on trafficking in persons, including the analysis of the modus operandi of trafficking syndicates, and to strengthen national programmes to combat this problem through sustained bilateral, regional and international cooperation. Given below are the work done by the agencies of the UN in the field of trafficking. i) UNIFEM The United Nations Development Fund for Women97 (UNIFEM) provides financial support and technical assistance to innovative programmes promoting women’s human rights and issues related to women’s empowerment and gender equality. UNIFEM works primarily at the country level but is moving towards regional programmes in which individual country projects are linked in terms of a common focus and approach adapted to national situations and capacities. At the regional level, UNIFEM undertakes advocacy as well as sponsoring action-research in the area of trafficking in women and children. ii) UNESCO One of the aims of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization98 (UNESCO) is to promote human rights and fundamental freedoms. UNESCO takes action in international standard setting, in the preparation and adoption of international instruments and statutory recommendations.
