d) Education and Awareness
Participants are of the view that it is important to adopt a corporate
governance culture amongst businesses especially among the small and
medium enterprises (SMEs) as they make up over 96% of all businesses
in Malaysia. This could be done through continuous education and
awareness raising programmes, whereby, the businesses are wellinformed of the benefits that would be enjoyed by adopting corporate
governance and respecting human rights in their day-to-day operations.
It is undeniable that cost is crucial in implementing human rights elements
in the day-to-day operations, but they would have enjoyed the high
revenue that enhances their reputations. Their businesses would be more
efficient; they would be included in the value chain (whereby more
multinational companies will engage with them); and their employees
and customers would be loyal to them.
e) Sustainability
It was emphasised that by reporting on sustainability issues, the businesses
tend to act more sustainably. The benefits of sustainability reporting
include the integration of corporate sustainability into operations,
improvement of company’s reputation, enhancement of company’s
commitments, creation of values and jobs, and the strengthening of the
relationship with stakeholders and investors.
Businesses that perform in a sustainable manner are warmly connected
to healthy economic, social and environmental systems. These businesses

One participant from the trade union highlighted that there was a
small group of employers who was in favour of and support the union
for its activities although many still viewed trade unions as a threat
to companies. The participant also expressed his hopes that through
business and human rights approaches, workers could join the union so
that their rights are protected.

Union busting is a serious matter and rampant among in-house unions
(rather than the national union). Disputes often happen during collective
agreement discussions whereby the main union leaders are often sacked
or dismissed from companies for trivial reasons. This is a violation of human
rights.
