c) Roundtable Discussion on Promoting Business and Human Rights in Malaysia As part of its commitment to promote business and human rights in Malaysia and as continuation from its efforts in 2015 (where the Commission held a series of discussions on BHR in KL, Sabah and Sarawak), the Commission also organised an RTD on ‘Promoting Business and Human Rights in Malaysia’ in Pulau Pinang on 16 May 2017 with the following objectives: i) To introduce the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (the Guiding Principles) to relevant stakeholders; ii) To enhance understanding on ways to implement the Guiding Principles in practical terms; iii) To identify, exchange and promote good/best practices and lessons learned on the implementation of the Guiding Principles; iv) To provide an opportunity for various groups including the government, NGOs, Government Linked Companies (GLCs) and other civil society organisations to express their concerns and perspectives on issues relating to business and human rights; and v) To discuss possible collaborations with various stakeholders in promoting the agenda on business and human rights in Malaysia. Several speakers from government agencies, regulators as well as business entities were invited to provide information regarding their efforts, and the challenges they faced in promoting human rights. The speakers were Ms. Nor Azimah from the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM), Ms. Ong Li Lee from Bursa Malaysia, Mr. Ong Kam Loon from the Teleplan and YB Dato S U H A K A M A N N U A L R EPOR T 2017 37 1 Apart from its engagement with FGV and FELDA, the Commission also explores possible collaborations with other business entities. In relation thereto, an exploratory discussion on the possibility of collaborating with Sime Darby Properties was held in December. Such a collaboration serves as a stepping stone to expand the Commission’s engagement with the manufacturing sector in Malaysia besides the plantation sector. C H A P T E R also conducted four (4) visits to FGV and FELDA Plantations in Pahang. During the visits, the Commission’s delegation had met and interviewed the plantation managers and employees. The remaining activities stated under the MoU such as capacity building programmes and consultation with stakeholders will be carried out in 2018.
