Ⅱ. Fishery Development in Taiwan and Overview of Fishery Workforce︱
In recent years, Taiwan’s inshore and offshore
fisheries8 (including inland fishing catch) amounted
to around 175,600 tonnes with a value of NT$16.311
billion a year. Fisheries development is therefore
characterized by diversification. Comprehensive
restrictions on the building of fishing vessels were
imposed in 1989 to ensure the reasonable use of
fishery resources and the sustainability of fisheries.
The number of fishing vessels (rafts) has been
progressively reduced to implement responsible
fishing to facilitate the rehabilitation and sustainable
development of inshore and offshore fisheries. Rest
and recreation facilities for foreign crews were also
established at Keelung, Penghu, and Kaohsiung to
protect their human rights.
8. Inshore fishery refers to fishery activities within the territorial
waters (within 12 nautical miles) of Taiwan; Offshore fishery refers
to activities within the economic zone (12 to 200 nautical miles) of
Taiwan; Distant water fishery refers to fishing activities in waters
more than 200 nautical miles from Taiwan or in the economic
zones of other countries through fishery cooperation.
