In early 2022, we held our first annual program on NHRI accreditation, a blended learning course for NHRI leadership and staff to build skills and develop awareness about the various aspects of the accreditation process. The annual program followed a pilot program held in Doha, Qatar in 2020, and will now form part of the APF’s annual program of work. We also continued to support our members with advice and individual support on preparing for the accreditation review. The 2021-22 period saw a large increase in APF members undergoing a review at the SCA, with 12 member NHRIs reviewed across the two sessions, which were held online due to COVID travel restrictions. Despite these restrictions, the APF regional observer on the SCA (the APF’s Legal and Policy Manager) was able to travel to Palestine to participate from the offices of the Palestine Independent Commission for Human Rights (ICHR), the elected member of the SCA from the Asia Pacific region. The NHRIs of Korea, Mongolia, Palestine, Qatar, Samoa, Jordan and New Zealand were reaccredited as A-status during the 2021-22 period, while the NHRI of Thailand was upgraded from B-status to A-status. Australia’s NHRI had its application for reaccreditation deferred, while the SCA recommended Special Reviews of the NHRIs of Nepal and Sri Lanka. “The National Human Rights Commission of Thailand (NHRCT) values the active and leading roles of the APF … especially in the SCA by representing members over the last year.” National Human Rights Commission of Thailand (NHRCT), APF Annual Member Survey 2021-22 We continued development on a digital library to support NHRIs NHRIs and other human rights defenders (HRDs) require access to legal resources to document and report human rights violations, seek redress for victims, engage in advocacy efforts, and challenge unjust laws and policies. To support their work, we continued development on the APF Digital Library, an online database that will include a comprehensive set of resources to strengthen the capacity of NHRIs to carry out their mandate. The APF Digital Library is currently being developed with the support of Human Rights Information and Documentation Systems (HURIDOCS), a non-government organisation specialising in the development of tools and resources to make human rights information more accessible.
