CHAPTER 2 While the visits by external delegations were held with the aim of exchanging views and best practices on human rights issues, and sharing the work of the Commission as an NHRI, the Commission is pleased to note that some of these visits had resulted in further collaboration between the Commission and the organisations involved such as TI-Malaysia and UNICEF Malaysia. Some of the key outcomes included: i) An in-house training session on Corruption, Transparency, Integrity, and Good Governance conducted by TI-M for the Commission’s staff on 7 October. ii) The exchange of promotional materials between the Commission and TI-M on issues championed by the respective organisations. iii) The identification of several areas for collaboration between the Commission and UNICEF Malaysia in the promotion and protection of children’s rights in Malaysia. iv) A joint visit to detention centres by the Commission and the EAIC on 22 September. v) Plans to undertake joint investigations with the EAIC on issues of concern within the ambit of the Commission’s mandate. (b) Working Meetings with Key Stakeholders The Commission also continued to develop relationships with key stakeholders, particularly Ministries and the Parliament, through working meetings aimed at discussing various thematic human rights issues. Some of the key meetings are summarised as follows: Table 9: Working Meetings DATE DETAILS OF MEETING 10 August The Commission met with the Minister in charge of Governance, Integrity, and Human Rights, YB Senator Datuk Paul Low Seng Kuan, to discuss a few pertinent matters under the Minister’s purview including ATD, the NHRAP, and the Government’s follow-up to the recommendations contained in the Commission’s National Inquiry report. 11 August The Commission held a working meeting with the Attorney General of Malaysia, Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Haji Mohamed Apandi bin Haji Ali. The objective of this meeting was to discuss issues concerning security laws in Malaysia, amendments to the Legal Profession Act, ATD, as well as amendments to the Commission’s parent Act. 25 August The Commission called on the office of the Vice-Chancellor of UNISEL. The objective of this meeting was to explore the proposal for the introduction of a human rights subject in UNISEL. 15 September The Commission held a meeting with the President of the Senate, YB Senator Dato’ Sri SA Vigneswaran.
