As a follow-up to those meetings, in April, the Commission conducted an introductory workshop on international human rights treaties in particular UDHR, CRC, CEDAW, and the Cairo Declaration to Judges and Sulh Officers of the Selangor Syariah Courts at National University of Malaysia (UKM). The Commission invited three experts to provide information and to share their experiences on issues relating to children and women. They were Prof Datin Dr Raihanah Hj Abdullah, Senior Law and Syariah Lecturer in University of Malaya (UM); Prof Dr Najibah Mohd Zain, Senior Law Lecturer in International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), and Prof Dato’ Noor Aziah Mohd Awal, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic & International Affairs) of UKM. The workshop was also attended by Prof Datuk Dr Noor Azlan Ghazali, Vice-Chancellor of UKM and YAA Dato’ Dr Hj Mohd Na’im Hj Mokhtar, Chief Judge of the Selangor Syariah Courts. The objectives of the workshop were as follows: i) ii) To raise the awareness of Judges and Sulh Officers of Selangor Syariah Court on the rights of women and children as stipulated in the international treaties (UDHR, the Cairo Declaration, CEDAW, and CRC) so that they can be adapted and used as a reference in resolving Syariah disputes; and iii) To provide an open platform for the participants to discuss in depth and to share their views on the elements stipulated in the international treaties (UDHR, the Cairo Declaration, CEDAW, and CRC) as well as their correlation with cases in Syariah Courts. Throughout the workshop, several issues were raised which include the following: i) ii) The participants took note of the introduction of a mobile court. They were further informed that the mobile court has been used by the indigenous peoples in Selangor in facilitating them to apply for permission to enter into marriage as well as for consent from CHAPTER 1 To provide further explanation and clarification on the principles and standards enshrined in the international treaties (UDHR, the Cairo Declaration, CEDAW, and CRC) to the participants; The participants were curious about the volume of complaints received by the Commission relating to Syariah matters and involving Syariah courts. In response, they were informed that the percentage of complaints affecting Syariah Courts is low.
