Resident Representative of UNDP graced the program as Special Guests. Former Chairman of NHRC Nasima Begum, ndc chaired the program. Dr. Kamal Uddin Ahmed, Former Full Time Member, NHRC delivered welcome speech. Dr. Abul Hossain, National Consultant of the National Inquiry committee presented concept paper on the report of the Committee. Jesmin Ara Begum, Honorary Member, NHRC presented executive summary of the report. Ms. Rokeya Kabir, Executive Director, BNPS, Dr. Meleka Banu, General Secretary, Bangladesh Mahila Parishad, Taslima Yasmin, Associate Professor, Departmemt of Law, University of Dahaka spoke as the panelists. Hon’ble Chief Guest said, “as a religion, Islam was the first religion that has given women’s rights. No religion created any obstacle for ensuring women’s rights. Awareness raising is important to change outlook and reduce discrimination. He called on NHRC to raise this awareness. He added that “we have enacted many laws. We need to monitor these, Although we have amended Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, rape incidents are noticed. we need to implement this law.” Md. Tofazzal Hossain Mia said, “A woman has to face unlimited consequences if she is raped or tortured. Unwanted abortion, mental sickness and many other issues are there. We also need to think about preventing cyber crime.” Nasima Begum, ndc said, “We are doing national inquiry to prevent violence against women. I believe, violence against women will be reduced if the perpetrators are given exemplary punishment”. Dr. Kamal Uddin Ahmed said, “Women are facing discrimination in various sectors. To eliminate this discrimination, national inquiry is one of the core steps taken by NHRC”. He also added, “there are lack of women friendly acts in our country. It is a matter of hope that we are going to have anti-discrimination act”. Gopalganj District Human Rights Committee’s Meeting As part of NHRC’s initiative to increase awareness on human rights, focal desk has been established.
