NHRC delivered welcome speech. Newly appointed Member of NHRC Mr. Aminul Islam, Mr. Kongjori Chowdhury, Dr. Biswajit Chanda, Dr. Tania Haque, Mr. Kawser Ahmed attended the Program. Speakers committed to continue coordinated efforts for the promotion and protection of human rights. They committed to take strong and neutral action to prevent all types of human rights violation including disappearance, murder and extra-judicial killings. Chief Guest Anisul Huq said in his speech, “We will ensure punishment for those who violate human rights. We have ensured justice in many gross human rights violations including murder of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. We are working for combatting terrorism and radicalism. Our image has brightened in the international arena. But, some people are portraying us negatively for gaining politically. He also said that the anti-discrimination act would be enacted soon and it was in parliamentary standing committee for scrutiny. Special Guest Md. Mainul Kabir Said, “National Human Rights Commission is an independent body. Ministry sanctions budget for it. In 2009, Commission’s budget was only 1 crore 78lakh BDT, but now it is 12 crore BDT. Within a short span of time, the Commission has become member of Asia Pacific Forum and has got ‘B’ status in international arena. Present government has taken initiatives to enact antidiscrimination act, which is going to be a milestone. We hope that, we will be able to enact it soon.” NHRC Chairman Dr. Kamal Uddin Ahmed said, “UDHR was adopted on 10th December 1948 immediately after WWII. So, it is considered as a memorable day. Bangladesh was born for establishing rights and our Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman led the liberation war. Bangladesh has been elected as a member of UN Human Rights Council for the 5th time. This has brightened our image ininternational arena. We will work to promote discrimination free society.” NHRC Full Time Member Md. Salim Reza said, “NHRC was established by Paris Principle due to the struggle of CSOs and stakeholders as a balanced organization including representation of different occupation and gender. NHRC’s goal is to promote human rights culture around the world.
