Rather there are specific categories of unprotected speech: these are fighting words, libel, obscenity, child pornography and true threats. Speech can only be regulated when it directly incites imminent criminal activity or consists of specific threats of violence targeted against a person or group — the court does not allow special protection for any particular groups. However, speech cannot be restricted because of its message, its ideas, its subject matter, or its content.
